| Steelhead Trout |
 |
| General Description: |
Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are the anadromous strain of rainbow trout - meaning that they migrate into salt water before returning to spawn. They also differ from Pacific salmon in that they don't expire following a spawning cycle. |
| Physical Attributes: |
Steelhead range in size from 6-8 lbs. with some specimens reaching maximum weights in excess of 20 lbs. |
| Availability: |
Steelhead fishing is best late in the fall and peaks in October. They are also available during their sea-bound run from late April through early May. Steelhead are considered to be the "ultimate" trout by most fly fisherman. |
| Angling Opportunities: |
Steelhead are known for their fighting ability. Fishing opportunities are limited to those rivers which support adequate populations. |
| Recommended Tackle: |
Spinning: Medium action rod spun with 10-12lb. test monofilament line.
Fly-fishing: Graphite fly rod in the 5-6 weight class. Floating lines with sinking tips are recommended.
Lures and flies should be purchased locally. |
| Table fare: |
Due to limited Steelhead populations, catch & release fishing practices are encouraged for this fragile but valuable resource. |
