| Red Salmon |
 |
| General Description: |
Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) or "reds" return in large numbers to Alaskan waters during the summer months. |
| Physical Attributes: |
Average size of a spawning "red" runs from 5-8 pounds with larger specimens reported to tip the scales at 15 pounds. |
| Availability: |
Reds are plentiful from early June until August. It is not uncommon to experience localized runs, on particular streams, in excess of 50,000 fish. |
| Angling Opportunities: |
Best fishing opportunities are found downstream of the lakes where the fish ripen to spawning maturity. Red salmon are not know for their aggressive strike behavior but are easily caught once the technique is mastered. |
| Recommended Tackle: |
Spinning: Medium action rods of 6-7' in length with 8-12 lb. test monofilament line.
Fly-fishing: Graphite rods in the 5-7 weight class. Floating lines with sinking tips will suit most situations. Weighted flies or attached split shot are typically employed in deeper pools or fast-moving currents.
Lures and flies should be purchased upon arrival to take advantage of the "hottest" local offerings. |
| Table fare: |
Sockeyes are prized for the deep color and high oil content of their flesh. They are not only considered to be the tastiest of all the Pacific salmon varieties but are excellent candidates for smoking and freezing. Obviously, to retain flavor, proper handling is required. |
