Pink Salmon
General Description:

Pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) are also referred to as "humpies"  or "humpback salmon" due to the pronounced hump which adorns adult males during their spawning runs.

Physical Attributes: Pink salmon typically weigh in the vicinity of  3-4 pounds and may reach a length in excess of 20 inches.
Availability: Pinks show up in great abundance around mid-July and continue to swarm into streams until the peak of their run in late August.
Angling Opportunities: Fishing for pink salmon can be quite enjoyable given the sheer  numbers of returning fish.  Pinks also prove to be far less discriminating than other varieties of salmon and aggressively strike evidencing little regard for casting ability and presentation.
Recommended Tackle:

Spinning:      Light action rod spun with 6-8 lb. test monofilament line - a trout rod.

Fly-fishing:   Graphite rod in 4-5 weight class. Floating lines with sinking tips are recommended.

Note: for late season fishing, it would be prudent to carry heavier tackle in preparation  for potentially hooking up with a silver.

Lures and flies should be purchased locally.

Table fare:

Pink salmon are often overlooked in the kitchen  in comparison to  competing species.  However, they are quite tasty when freshly caught and grilled over an open fire. It is best to  consume "bright" fish close to the salt  since pinks degenerate quickly after migrating into fresh water  systems.
