| Silver Salmon |
 |
| General Description: |
Silver salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) or "Coho" are the last salmon species to return to Alaskan rivers on an annual basis. |
| Physical Attributes: |
Silver salmon average 7-12 lbs and commonly exceed 25 inches in length. In fact, larger specimens have been caught in excess of 30 lbs. |
| Availability: |
The silvers first start showing up in July providing salt water trolling opportunities. In August, silvers gather at stream mouths awaiting rising water flow to trigger spawning migration. The best freshwater Coho fishing typically occurs during the month of September but the fish remain available into October. |
| Angling Opportunities: |
Silvers don't return in the numbers characteristic of reds or pinks but should not be overlooked. They serve as prime targets for most anglers because they are aggressive, acrobatic and utterly thrilling to catch. |
| Recommended Tackle: |
Spinning: Medium-heavy rod with 12-18 lb. test monofilament line.
Fly-fishing: Graphite fly rod in the 8-9 weight class. High capacity reels should be matched to the rod with plenty of backing. Weight forward floating lines with sinking tips are recommended.
Lures and flies should be purchased locally.

| Table fare: |
Another delicious salmon for the table but not regarded as tasty in comparison to a red or king. |
