King Salmon
General Description:

King salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) also commonly referred to as "Chinook" represent the largest and rarest of Alaska's salmon species.  As aggressive, powerful game fish, they have been known to not only break tackle but truly test an angler's endurance.

Physical Attributes: The King salmon is a huge fish which often exceeds 25-30 pounds.  The world record, taken by a recreational sportsman, was caught on the Kenai river in 1986 - it weighed 97 pounds.
Availability:

Freshwater king salmon fishing starts in  from Early June and runs until the second week of July. Saltwater trolling opportunities exist from early spring until late autumn.

Angling Opportunities: Distribution of king salmon is limited to a few rivers with restricted access and additional licensing requirements.  A special king salmon stamp must be purchased.
Recommended Tackle: (freshwater)

Spinning:     Medium-heavy action rod of 7-8' in length with a matched quality real. Line weight of 18-30 lb. monofilament will suffice. Lures should be purchased locally.

Fly-fishing:  Graphite rods in the 9-11 weight class.  A high capacity reel should be matched to the rod with 200 yards of 30-lb. backing. Floating lines with sinking tips are recommended.

Lures and flies should be purchased locally.

Recommended Tackle: (saltwater) Necessary saltwater trolling gear will be provided by our charter captains.
Table fare: The king salmon is prized due to both it's size and flavor - another delicious candidate for the smokehouse.
